Take Back The Night: It is our cause to create safe communities and respectful relationships through awareness events and initiatives. We hope our march, rally, and candle light vigil event unite those who seek to end sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual abuse and all other forms of sexual violence. TBTN empowers survivors in the healing process and inspires responsibility in all.
River Fall’s 1st Annual Take Back the Night March and Rally: The mission of this event is to raise awareness in our community about the issue of sexual violence and to let it be known that this violence or violence of any kind will not be tolerated in our community or anywhere else.
History of the Take Back the Night event:
In the late 1800's "Jack the Ripper" murdered at least five women at night, and all were prostitutes. No one was ever charged with the crimes. There was never a safe feeling for women walking alone at night. In 1975 the "Yorkshire Ripper," Peter Sutcliffe, attacked his first victim. He was convicted of killing thirteen women and severely beating seven others. During this time, the police encouraged ALL women to stay indoors at night. Outraged, the women of Leeds, England held their first Reclaim the Night event in 1977 in response to these murders and the public's reaction.
Thirty-three years ago, people everywhere started to stand up and speak out against sexual violence under the banner of "Take Back the Night". Now it has become known internationally as a visible way to take a stand against sexual violence.
Help by shattering the silence and talking about the issue of sexual violence.
