Turningpoint FOR VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE, INC.  ::  CURRENT EVENTS

October is Domestic Violence
Awareness Month

Please help us end the cycle of domestic violence.  Remember: people are not to be blamed for the violence committed against them.  No one deserves to be abused, used, or beaten.  Everyone should feel safe in his or her own home.  Nobody should fear the one they love.  People deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

In Memory Of
Suzanne Weiland
September 16th, 1966 to August 20th, 2006

Yearly estimates say that from 960,000 to over 3.9 million women are physically abused by someone who promised to love them.  We have all read the statistics.  The numbers are impersonal and don't begin to describe the magnitude of the problem or the fear, pain and sorrow experienced by those trapped in violent relationships.  Families are destroyed, lives shattered, children scared and changed forever.  Whether we knew her or not, we all lost a friend, sister, daughter in the death of Suzanne Weiland.  We can all help solve the terrible tragedy of domestic violence.  Please be open to those around you, watch for signs of violence and offer support.  Something as simple as offering a crisis line number might save a life.

Children's Summer Enrichment Program

This year Turningpoint was fortunate to offer a summer program for school age children.  Summer vacation can pose a difficult time for children and working parents.  Many of the programs and activities available for children provide opportunities to be with other children in a learning environment and learn skills that help them become happy, healthy, socially educated children.  Working parents are often unable to take the time to involve their children in these activities.

Our children went on field trips that provided cultural and/or educational experiences that they may not otherwise have had access to and offered some respite to busy working moms.  The children went to area zoos, museums, parks, children's theaters, and aquariums.  The program promoted learning healthy, non-violent social interactions and helped the children gain positive self-esteem and trust among themselves and adults.

Turningpoint's Children's Program focuses on positive interaction and self image, conflict resolution, healthy non-violent social interaction and emotional recognition.  By providing a summer program, the children were offered a well rounded and an enriching extension of what they are already learning at Turningpoint.  We feel that this summer program was long overdue and hope to be able to provide summer activities for children again next year.

Thank You to The People's Congregation Church in Bayport, MN.
Their support made this program a reality.
